Mantra or Pass

by Val

Know what’s funny?

Well one, I kind of look like a pencil with a broken eraser in this picture and two…
I don’t recognize her anymore.

Perhaps I shouldn’t say anymore. I don’t think I ever recognized her. The girl in this picture looks sick. I didn’t see her reflection in my mirror.

One of my many mantras was “I’m not sick” and cancer let me get away with that mantra. I thought it was overcoming cancer but now I see it as a pass it gave me.

You see it’s a pass because once you hear you have cancer you are on a chase to catch up to and beat cancer but cancer knows the race begins at the end not at the beginning.

The surviving cancer part feels like it begins at the same time others think you have beat it. It’s not the end of the race, it’s the time when you look around and say “Ohhh…this is a marathon not a sprint”
